Project Gladiator
Overview
West Virginia University’s Coliseum has been a central venue for basketball and volleyball for over five decades. When WVU partnered with Hope Gas, the goal was to create signage that honored the Coliseum’s historic legacy while signaling a modern transformation. City Neon brought this vision to life with functional, visually striking signage that elevates the fan experience and enhances the landmark’s presence.
Design & Branding
The new Hope Coliseum channel letters follow the building’s curved façade, complementing its architecture while improving visibility. The Flying WV logo was incorporated on both sides, serving as a bold visual anchor.
A nearly 50-foot-tall monument sign, inspired by the Olympic flame, became a signature element. Its revolving flame represents Hope Gas and the competitive spirit of WVU athletics. LED video boards at the base provide dynamic campus messaging, angled for optimal visibility from surrounding streets and parking areas.
Engineering & Fabrication
The Coliseum’s circular concrete structure required innovative engineering. The monument rests on a 54-inch diameter caisson foundation, extending 15 feet below grade. Custom raceways ensured channel letters followed the awning curve while maintaining structural integrity. All penetrations were carefully planned to preserve the historic building.
Installation & Logistics
City Neon coordinated installation while the Coliseum remained fully operational. Careful scheduling with WVU and local authorities ensured minimal disruption to events, parking, and daily operations. Signage was completed, tested, and ready before the season opener.
Technology & Illumination
Layered LED lighting highlights key elements, including push-thru acrylic lettering, the rotating flame, and video boards. Energy-efficient LEDs provide vibrant, long-lasting illumination, visible both day and night. Video boards operate independently, allowing flexible, secure campus messaging.
Impact & Legacy
The signage has immediately elevated the venue’s presence. Athletic Director Wren Baker remarked that it conveys, “this is a place where big things happen.” For Hope Gas, the monument sets a benchmark for branded properties, while WVU leverages naming rights to support long-term athletic success.
Through thoughtful design, engineering, and installation, City Neon transformed the historic Coliseum into a contemporary icon, honoring its legacy while creating a lasting symbol of energy, excellence, and community.
